Due to current coronavirus infection rates in Madison and Dane County, as a precaution, on Nov. 24, 2020, we announced that we would be closing all MMSD childcare sites for the two weeks following Thanksgiving break. We expect to reopen Dec. 14.
This includes all MSCR Cares sites as well as sites operated by private childcare providers (YMCA, Wisconsin Youth Company, Red Caboose, Wil-Mar, Lussier).
We made this difficult decision based on the following:
- Careful consideration of current COVID-19 rates. Over a 7-day period ending November 18, Wisconsin averaged 6,564 new cases per day for a total of 74,000 active cases in the state. Unfortunately, this spike came at a time when many families have prepared to gather for the holiday break.
- Recommendations from Public Health Madison & Dane County to avoid gathering and traveling for the holiday.
- A sobering understanding of the impact a surge in post-holiday positive cases would have on our childcare sites' ability to operate and keep students and staff safe.
During the two week closure, we have asked that elementary school principals work closely with teachers and support staff to check in with affected students and families. This includes additional attendance monitoring for child care students, and additional outreach as needed to provide support.
We know that this closure creates an extra hardship for families who rely on having access to consistent childcare. We will always put the health and safety of our students and staff at the center and we feel that this was the responsible choice.
As a community, we are all in this together. We look forward to welcoming our childcare students and staff back on December 14, 2020.
