Volunteer Opportunities

All on-going volunteers are required to complete the volunteer application. If the volunteer position will have you working 1:1 with students without immediate MMSD staff supervision, you must also complete and return the disclosure/background check.

Literacy Tutor

Position Purpose: Volunteers are matched 1:1 with a student to work on literacy skills. Volunteer tutors work with students consistently throughout the semester or year on literacy. Specific reading resources are provided by the supervising teacher.
Position Responsibilities: 

  • Volunteers are matched 1:1 with a student to engage in reading.
  • Dedicate at least an hour a week to tutor. 

Time Commitment: 30 minutes - 1 hour per week or more, Monday - Friday, mornings and afternoons during the Literacy Block

Literacy Support Volunteer

Position Purpose: Volunteers serving as Literacy Support Tutors are an extra set of hands for the classroom teacher during the literacy block. The purpose of this position is to help support literacy skills to ensure that students are successful learners. Specific reading resources and curriculum will be provided by the supervising teacher.

Position Responsibilities: Volunteers will complete a wide range of duties which are likely to vary from day to day. Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Circulating throughout the classroom while the teacher is giving the core lesson for the day 
  • Working with small groups of students throughout the classroom to develop: 

- Foundational skills such as speaking and listening, print concepts, phonics, word study

- Reading

- Writing

Time Commitment: 30 minutes - 1 hour or more per week, Monday - Friday, mornings and afternoons during the Literacy Block

Math Support Volunteer

Position Purpose:
Extra set of hands…The purpose of this position is to assist students in engaging with learning through mathematics. Math tutors will be matched one-on-one or small groups to support math skills to ensure that students are successful learners. 

Volunteers will complete a wide range of duties which are likely to vary from day to day. Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Circulating throughout the classroom while the teacher is giving the core lesson for the day
  • Working with one-on-one or with small groups of students throughout the classroom to gain confidence and competence in mathematics.
  • Be a caring adult who is there to listen to their mathematical reasoning, ask questions to guide their thinking, and help them experience success in mathematics

Math resources will be available online and through the supervising teacher. 
Time Commitment: 30 minutes - 1 hour/weekly, Monday - Friday, mornings/afternoons during the Math Section

Recess Assistant

Position Purpose: The Recess Assistant and the Lunchroom Assistant will act as another set of eyes and ears during lunch and recess.

Recess Position Responsibilities:

  • Monitor recess for safe play
  • Participate and lead recess activities
  • Encourage positive engagement with activities and other students 
  • Help staff members gather students when it is time for them to line up for dismissal from recess. 
  • Lunchroom Assistant Position Responsibilities:
  • Help younger kids through the lunch line and learn how to open their milk cartons.
  • Interact with students at the peanut-free table.
  • Interact positively and monitor lunchroom expectations

Time Commitment: Monday - Friday, flexible hours
